And always looking for challenges, he did just that, and graduated from MIT with both Undergraduate and Masters in Atmospheric Sciences from MIT. "You need to switch to our department where we solve REALLY difficult problems… engineering is too easy." he was told. He gained these skills as a youth tinkering with household items and was recruited by his high-school to run the AV lab and later in the Navy added more skills to his plate including "airplane mechanic", though he didn't go into that field as he was just a few hours shy of his required hours for licensing. Instead, he went to MIT where he began in engineering but was quickly recruited by the Atmospheric Sciences Department who discovered him as he was working at Lincoln Labs to help pay for tuition. Tillman "tinkering" with audio equipment with his son in the 1980s Radio Shack when we were growing up, was frequented as much as the grocery store.
It wasn't long before he was reconfiguring things to be better than they were originally designed.
